Interview with Firm Kongthong (President) of Me to We Club
1. Please introduce us to your club (basic information including club name, when it was founded, meeting time/place, sponsor teacher, the overall purpose/aim of the club) Me to We Club is a fundraising club directly connected to the We organization. Our club is helping globally to create a better environment for everyone, no matter where you live. We mainly focus on our five pillars - food, clean water, opportunity, education and health. The club’s meeting is in room 2A2 every Tuesday lunchtime with Ms. Watanabe as our sponsor teacher. 2. Could you describe the activities that take place during club meetings? During our club’s meeting, we focus on each month’s/term’s purpose and expand on our ideas to help out on that particular problem. We make the school get involved as much as possible, and also the surrounding community. We brainstorm different ideas to create event(s), and then the leaders - me as the President and Jessica Siu and Sean Choi as Vice President - and Ms. Watanabe will discuss later 3. What did your club do last year, in terms of events and any meaningful achievements? Last year, the club big event was to go to WE Day which is an annual event that inspirational people from all over the country to come and speak. However, the club did not have an important role in the organization, but since I am the president this year, I would like to change the club to be more involvement inside and outside the school. 4. What events are you planning to organize this year? For this year, we have our focus topics for each term, term one is education, term two is health, and term three is environment. Each term, our club will be thinking about events we can do that relate to our purpose. We bring the passion from all members and creativity to be different from other club to let people get involved. These are a few events we had this year so far : ‘We Scare Hunger’ where we collected canned food instead of candies for our local food banks; ‘We Are Silent’ is an event where we acknowledge those people, especially children, who do not have the chance to speak up for themselves on November 20th by having a vow of silence, ‘WE Day’, and selling raffle tickets for self care package to express self-love on Valentine’s Day. For the rest of the year, we are focusing on mental health and anti-bullying. Our upcoming event on Pink Shirt Day is to sell pink t-shirt to express this year’s slogan, ‘Be Kind’. We are also going to encourage people who are suffering with mental health to acknowledge that they are not alone. 5. What is the best part about participating in this club/ what makes your club stand out? The best part for me to be a part of this club is to give back to the community. Not many people realize how much the earth, the people around us, or even our loved ones are getting hurt and need help. This club stands out because we are helping improve huge problems around the world. The five pillars created from the organization cover everything and help us to concentrate on what we can do. 6. What is one word that best represents your club (e.g. adventure, energy, fun)? I would have to say ‘teamwork’ represents this club because no matter how hard the event is, everyone participates and helps each other find the solution. Everyone is willing to help in every single event, and everyone shares their ideas, helping this club becomes unique in its own way. 7. To whom would you recommend this club (e.g. to those who have a passion for teaching others)? I would recommend this club to those who want to help the community but don’t know what in particular they want to help in, or to those who love helping. I want people to join this club because they care about others, and are actually willing to dedicate energy and time towards improving the problems that are happening all around the world. |
