Digital Detox - Why do we need it?
Written by Christine Jiang
The 12 Days of Digital Detox is a challenge proposed by the Brain Study group, an off-timetable course that started in 2017. The members of the club wish to help students and staffs in Uhill thrive.
For every day in the 12 Days of Digital Detox, there is a new challenge to help students and teachers maintain a healthy relationship with their technologies. The digital detox ends with a two-day competition with prizes. Each student receives a booklet. If the student successfully refrains themselves from their devices for non-educational purposes, their teachers will give them a stamp. Winners were drawn at the Winter Assemblies.
"Detoxing" from digital devices is often seen as a way to focus on real-life social interactions without distractions.

So why do we need to cut off from our devices?
In some situations, you might feel like you are addicted to your devices.
In a poll conducted by Common Sense Media, 50% of teens reported that they felt that they were addicted to their mobile devices. About 80% of the teen participants said that they check their digital devices hourly.
The research suggests:
Although we are increasingly concerned that technologies like smartphones and social media result in more social comparison, and loneliness, never fail to realize that technology can also give us a sense of joy and excitement.
