Written by Nadia Mehajabin Running. Ever since I was born I was running. Running away from my problems. Running away from my responsibilities. Ever since the head of this gang rescued me I’ve been oh so thankful to them. So, I joined the gang and helped them. Right now. I’m being chased by a few people. You see, these people stole from the gang I’m in and I’m supposed to take back what’s ours. I ran into an alley. I didn’t think there would be THIS many people. In the dark alleyway I could barely see what I’m walking on. It felt slippery. I bet it’s filthy. I hid behind a dumpster, which I could recognise because of the neon garbage sign on it, I heard a few shouts and rushed footsteps. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears. If they see me I’m dead meat. I took out the bag for which they are chasing me and placed it on the ground. I ripped the location locator from my neck and tied it around the bag and hid the bag behind the dumpster so that it would be hard to find without having the coordinates of my locator. This way they can find the bag even if I die or decide to run away. I sat there on filthy damp floor, head leaned against the wall and laughing. What has my life come to? I was about to get admitted to Harvard this year. But that car crash left me with nothing. At the moment I’m an orphan who joined a mafia gang. What things I could accomplish and what have I accomplished? A bunch of enemies. That’s it. I took out the gun from my pocket that the head of the gang gave me as a present. My name engraved on it with gold letters. It is the nicest thing I own. I left it on the package and stood up wiping the sweat off my forehead. I ran towards the end of the alley. They probably heard me because I could hear shouting and gunshots behind me. I had asthma ever since I was a kid. Right now, I don’t know if I’m getting an asthma attack or it’s the realisation that my death could be any moment right now. I dodged bullets by running in a zigzag pattern. I came to an abrupt stop when I saw a few guys from the other gang standing in front of me. I looked back and I saw the other half of the group behind me. I was surrounded. Walls were on both sides. I can’t climb walls. Heck, I can’t even climb trees. I closed my eyes and said silent sorry to the gang I worked for. I couldn’t finish my mission. All of a sudden I heard a loud gunshot and a ringing in my ears. It was too loud. It hurt. I looked down and saw a hole right through my stomach. I fell backwards. I faced the sky, it was a full moon and the moon was perpendicular to my face. I’m coming mom and dad. I muttered and closed my eyes, taking my last breath. Inspired by a movie I saw. |
