Kids Takeover UBC is an annual kids-centred event, taking place at various locations around UBC, such as the Museum of Anthropology, Belkin Art Gallery, and the UBC School of Music on February 16th, the day before Family Day. It is UBC’s version of ‘Takeover Day’ from the United Kingdom, to acknowledge the role of the youth in art, museums, galleries, and heritage sites. This event is focused towards kids aged from 5-9 years old, but this year a new demographic has been invited.
‘Kids Takeover The Stage’ is a new twist to the event which allows kids of all ages showcase their talents as opposed to watching the adults, creating a more ‘for kids, by kids’ experience. Along with this revision, opportunities for high school students to participate have become apparent. |
1. Performances
Everybody has talents, and here you can showcase yours in front of a supportive crowd, alone or with a group. Whether it’s singing, dancing, music, poetry, reciting your short story, juggling, magic, acting, comedy, or anything else you can perform, there’s a spot on stage for everyone.
2. Volunteer
As a past volunteer and performer with Kids Takeover UBC, I can comfortably say that the volunteer experience is accommodating and filled with benefits, such as free food/merch. Many different roles are available, ranging from managing their social media accounts to being a Tour Guide to an MC for the show. All these positions require training and do give volunteer hours.
If you don't want to perform or volunteer, attending the event was never out of the equation, going with your family is the best thing to do for all ages this Family Day Weekend.
